To develop and improve students’ problem solving and reasoning skills, as well as their mathematical knowledge and also to involve in projects leading to high quality research in the Mathematics domain
The Department of Mathematics in St. Mary’s College was well established in the year 1946 with Pre Degree (Science Batch) and BSc Mathematics Courses. In the bifurcation process in 1967, the BSc. Mathematics programme was shifted to Vimala College, Thrissur. In the year 1980, the BSc programme was reinstituted in our Alma Mater with Physics and Statistics as subsidiary disciplines. The Post Graduate Course was commenced in the year 1995 to promote higher studies and to inculcate the research culture in Mathematics.
The research environment of this department always furnished solid mathematical activities which in turn gained good reputation and results on the go. Adding flying colours to our achievements, the department was upgraded as a Research Centre by the Calicut University in the year 2012 with two research guides, Dr. Sr. Magie Jose and Dr.Parvathy K.S. At present sixteen research scholars are doing active research under the eminent guidance of four supervisors. Our research scholar Sr. Jorry T F was awarded Ph D in July 2019, adding laurels to the research culture here. The department also provides certificate course on research documentation through LATEX and skill enhancement course on art of Conversation English. To promote placements, the department is also arranging NET coaching for the aspiring young mathematicians.
