Shalabha Butterfly Garden

Butterflies survive and spread by formation of innumerable linkages with the abiotic and biotic factors. The Shalabha butterfly garden of St. Mary’s college is an attempt to create this web of life through planting of more than 200 butterfly host and nectar plants. These butterfly plants invite butterflies providing them safe food and shelter amidst the city skyscrapers. The garden is well set with potted plants. Plates present information regarding the plant species and the butterflies they host. The Shalabha butterfly garden was formally inaugurated by Dr. George Mathew, Scientist-emeritus, Department of Forest Entomology on 26th November 2014. From then on it has it has been a foundation for planning and implementation of various projects like the Fly a butterfly programme which promoted the protective rearing and release of more than 15 indigenous butterflies, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment sponsored conservation project, A home for tender wings that spread the pulse of butterfly conservation to the students in the neighbouring localities through competitions and seminars and facilitated the initiation and establishment of butterfly garden in more than 25 educational institutions. A butterfly garden has also been setup in the State Museum and Zoo, Thrissur with the contribution of more than 150 plants. The shalabha Butterfly garden popularises, promotes, propagates and protects native species of butterflies. It has through the years inspired conservation activities and outreach programs. It has raised public awareness and appreciation of conservation issues. It today exist as a key tool to connect with nature.
